How to Use Food Talk Cards

Food Talk Cards deck showing neutral food language prompts for kids

Food Talk Cards are built around one specific goal: helping the adults in a child's life practise neutral, judgement-free language about food, out loud, in the moments it actually matters.

What's included

The deck contains 34 cards covering child phrases, adult phrases, and reflection prompts, designed for children aged four to six, along with an instruction card. Each card gives you a real phrase or scenario to reframe, so you're not left inventing neutral language from scratch under pressure.

How to use it

Choose one or two cards before a meal, snack time, or group discussion. Read the prompt or scenario on the card, then practise reframing it together, either with your child directly or as a discussion point with other adults (this works well in early learning staff meetings, too). There's no script to memorise, just repeated small practice.

Benefits — what your family gets out of it

Because these cards target the adult's language first, they work even before a child fully understands the concept behind them — kids absorb the neutral phrasing simply by hearing it modelled consistently. Over time, families report fewer food-related power struggles and children who talk about food, and their own bodies, with noticeably less anxiety.
